Celebrating Halloween in Howard County Safely

Posted on October 22, 2020

Halloween is right around the corner and this year is already scary with a spooky virus lurking around. Traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, while technically allowed, is not encouraged in Howard County and we want our Dorsey Family Home residents to enjoy only the treats, without any of the tricks or germs! Below are our best ideas for celebrating safely in Maryland.

Pumpkin Carving and Decorating

Nothing screams Halloween like a good jack-o-lantern or painted pumpkin! Make an entire day of it by gathering the family and taking a trip to an outdoor pumpkin patch so everyone can pick their own pumpkin to decorate. Mary’s Maze in Ellicott City is a great place nearby to pick out your pumpkin with the family, and as their name suggests, they also have a corn maze and more! After picking your pumpkin, be creative with your decorating. Here are plenty of no-carve pumpkin ideas, or if you’re down to get your hands really dirty check out these pumpkin carving ideas that anyone can pull off in time for Halloween.

Ghost Tours

Old Ellicott City is known to have a haunted history and what better way to get into the spooky spirit than by taking a ghost walk downtown. Mt. Misery Ghost Walk is cautiously conducting their tours this year with limited capacity and additional COVID-19 precautions. Reservations are required so make sure to plan with your group in advance. Experience the very eerie legends of spirits and unexplained happenings in Ellicott City from decades and even days ago!

Fall Crafting Night

When Halloween ends, there are still technically 51 days left of fall. That means you can display beautiful, handcrafted decorations well-beyond Thanksgiving! Now’s your chance to festively decorate if your home isn’t already outfitted with earthy autumn accents.

Visit any of these nearby craft stores to fill your cart with items like burlap, ribbon, faux-fall flowers, faux-pumpkins, pinecones, mini gourds, and maple leaves. From fall wreaths to centerpieces, there’s no end to what you can design. Check out these 50+ DIY fall craft ideas to bring the season into your home.

Don’t let Covid stop you from embracing the best of the Fall season while staying safe. There’s plenty you can do to enjoy the crisp air and the fun of the halloween spirit. We hope these ideas have inspired you to take advantage of all that’s available in our area.
